Our Initiatives
In November 2023 we decided to “create seats at the table” for vulnerable foster youth who have aged out of the system ages 18-25 with a nutritional & cooking workshop culminating in a delicious Thanksgiving dinner.
We partnered with Foster Nation and planned the dinner for foster youth who suffer from food insecurity, lack of belonging, and other issues.
We gathered at a local supermarket, taught a workshop on nutritional health information, and purchased all of the ingredients needed for our thanksgiving dinner (together).
Marin, our founder, and another chef, taught the foster youth in a private kitchen how to follow a recipe, cut vegetables, maintain food sanitation guidelines, and basic cooking procedures.
When Marin, Our Seat at the Table team, the Foster Nation representatives, and the local foster youth finished cooking the meal, they gathered together in community for physical and psychological nourishment as they ate together. It was to no surprise that the youth felt a great sense of connection and belonging and learned about nutrition and cooking. In fact, Marin got several requests from the youth for a nutritional handbook and cookbook with the recipes.
